THAT'S YAII: Bayern's tragic evening in the Champions League final hit no player harder than Bastian Schweinsteiger
bastianschweinsteiger-obsession:
As the tragic night neared it’s end Bastian Schweinsteiger couldn’t even face his own girlfriend Sarah. When ‘Schweini’, the tragic hero during FC Bayern’s “drama dahoam”, left the Postpalast Hotel at half past five in the morning he took one exit, the supermodel another. The German international just wanted to get away and bury himself away somewhere. He wanted to see nothing, hear nothing and feel nothing.
Ironic given no other player embodies the “Mia san mia” of FCB better than the native Bavarian, no one lives it more intensely. When he announced that he was extending his contract at the club one and a half years ago he of course did it in front of the famous Südkurve. Even then his speech involved the proclamation that he would win them the Champions League at some point!
On Saturday evening, with Schweinsteiger walking up to take his penalty, the stand behind Petr Cech”s goal was waiting in avid anticipation of celebrating that moment. Der Fußballgott stood before his own fans desperate to bring joy to them, the club - and then he hit the inside of the post.
The 27-year-old was on the verge of tears and immediately pulled his shirt over his head in disgust. He knew what was coming. As Didier Drogba stepped up to smash Bayern’s hopes Schweinsteiger was no longer able to contain his emotions as he broke down on the pitch in front of his own fans. He crouched on the floor with his hands over his face not knowing what to do. He couldn’t understand what had just happened. Neither Didier Drogba nor his Bayern teammates had the words to bring the midfield maestro out of his sombre trance following the greatest tragedy of his career. Head coach Jupp Heynckes showed concern for the engine of his side who was the unequivocal hero during the semi-final shootout with Madrid. “When a renowned international player misses a penalty he first and foremost has to cope with it himself. It will take time,” explained the 67-year-old. Joachim Löw is expecting Schweinsteiger and his seven Bayern colleagues to arrive at the German national team training camp in Tourettes in the south of France on Friday. The head coach will be most worried about his vice-captain’s fragile mental state. “We don’t have a magic potion, but we will have to build all the lads up again. They can still win a title with us in the summer,” stated national team manager Oliver Bierhoff on Sunday. Like ‘Schweini’ though Philipp Lahm had nothing to say in regards to the national team or the upcoming European Championships. “I don’t even have second to think about that, I’m not in the right state of mind to do that,” declared the right-back. Words that easily could have come from the mouth of his forlorn Bayern colleague.
It brought tears to my whole saturday. the boys fought so hard, they deserved so much more… but it’s over and done, I truly believe they’ll hold their heads up and move on. That was ONE title. They have history, they are a team.
